International Women in Maritime Day

At Maritime Employees Training Limited (METL), we are committed to building a respectful, inclusive, and safe industry — one where gender equality is championed, and all forms of violence against women are actively prevented. As part of our ongoing awareness, METL continues to support initiatives that empower women and promote their participation in traditionally male-dominated sectors like maritime industry.

In alignment with this commitment, METL was proud to support one of our female trainees in attending the International Women in Maritime event earlier this year, an inspiring platform celebrating women’s leadership, resilience, and contribution to the maritime industry. Events like these reflect METL’s belief that prevention begins with education, visibility, and equal opportunity — by supporting women’s voices and leadership, we help promote a culture of respect that extends from our workplace to the wider maritime community.

See Sharon’s story below

On Thursday, I had the privilege of attending the International Women in Maritime event alongside Alisha Bull, Vice Secretary of the Tasmanian Branch, and Ang Moore, Chair of the National Women’s Council.

The event focused on the importance of increasing women’s participation in the maritime industry and featured powerful insights from women leaders across the sector. Highlights included lived experiences shared by the Commander of HMAS Hobart, the Chairperson of the AMSA Board, and a representative from the International Maritime Organization who is also a Master Mariner.

We were inspired by the many other distinguished speakers and guests who are actively shaping the future of maritime.

This event was a timely lead-up to the International Day for Women in Maritime, which will be celebrated this Sunday. Let’s continue working together to break down barriers and support the next generation of women in maritime.

Happy International Women in Maritime day for Sunday 💪
